European Federation recognizes benefits of CBD for neuropathic pain

The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes dates back to the beginning of humanity, and in Portugal, its medicinal properties have been recognized since 1563. Over time, the benefits of its use have been increasingly scientifically proven, with the growing number of companies in this industry and the application of hemp in various pathologies.

Cannabis is made up of more than a hundred different cannabinoids, including the acronyms THC and CBD , referring to tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol respectively, both of which are the best known and most discussed today. Hemp is a legal variety, rich in CBD and low in THC.

Since the 1960s, several scientific studies have been carried out in order to isolate THC and CBD so that these substances can be used for medical treatments. There has been a lot of progress over the years in these areas, and today it is possible, for example, to take oil with CBD .

effective

In recent years, scientific studies have proven the benefits of using cannabinoids to treat the following conditions:

  • Spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries;
  • Treatment of nausea and vomiting;
  • Appetite stimulation, especially in patients undergoing palliative care or cancer patients;
  • Chronic pain associated with the nervous system, neuropathic pain, or trigeminal nerve damage;
  • Gilles and Tourette syndrome;
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders, especially in children;
  • Glaucoma Treatment.

There are also thousands of studies for other pathologies and symptoms with good scientific evidence of the benefits of cannabinoids that, although with a reduced sample size, lack more data to be officially proven in the scientific world.

Taking into account all the studies carried out and scientific evidence presented to date, the European Pain Federation (EFIC) has officially recognized the potential benefits of using cannabinoids in the treatment of neuropathic pain, as well as in oncological treatments, when neuropathic pain is predominant.

Neuropathic pain is a chronic or prolonged pain that occurs as a result of nerve damage and affects millions of people around the world. Cannabinoids act on this pain, as they have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which alleviate or even cure this condition.

Cannabinoids may in fact be a new weapon in the treatment of chronic pain, an area where available therapies often do not satisfactorily alleviate the symptoms of these pathologies.
